grayActivity Ideas - Ice Bowling

Ice Bowling is a fun and easy game that you can play during the winter months.
What You Need:
  • All you need to Ice Bowl is winter weather with an icy play area or an indoor ice rink,
  • A one gallon plastic milk jug
  • 10 plastic 2 liter pop bottles
  • At least two people
  • A pad of paper with a pencil to keep score
How to Play:
  1. Fill all of the two liter bottles and the one gallon milk jug with water.
  2. Freeze all of the bottles in your freezer at home, or outside overnight. The jug must be frozen, but the 2 liter bottles do not have to be - they can just be filled with water.
  3. Find an icy area to play the game. If you play outside, you may have to clear some snow from an icy play area. Today, we will play in the Detroit Curling Club.
  4. The play area should be about 10 feet by 4 feet.
  5. Set up the ten 2 liter bottles at one end. These will be your pins. The bottles should be set up in a pyramid, 4 in the back, then 3, then 2, and then 1 in front.
  6. The jug is your ice bowling ball.
  7. Take turns trying to knock down the bottles by sliding the milk jug down the ice.
  8. Whichever player is waiting can stand by the pins, but not touch them, so he/she can return the jug back to the throwing player.
  9. This player also removes the pins that are knocked down from the first throw.
  10. After one player slides the jug two times, add up the number of pins he or she knocked down.
  11. Record the number for that frame on some paper to keep track of the score. This is that player's score for the frame.
  12. Now, the pins should be replaced for the next player.
  13. The next player will ice bowl their frame by sliding the jug two times.
  14. Players will alternate turns in this pattern for ten frames.
  15. At the end of ten frames, whoever has a higher score - or knocked down more pins - wins the game.
The Rules:
  • Throwing the jug is not allowed, the player must slide the jug.
  • Each player gets two slides per frame.
  • There are ten frames per game.
  • Have an adult approve the area you want to ice bowl in before you play, so you know it is safe.
  • Remember to always be a good sport.
  • Have Fun!
