Activity Ideas - Iceberg Jump
Iceberg Jump is a fun and easy game you can play with your friends and family.
WHAT YOU NEED:
- A large open space...
- Several hula hoops to serve as your icebergs...
- Use something else if you do not have enough hula hoops, be creative.
- You should have 2 less icebergs than total number of players.
- And at least 6 people.
- Iceberg jump is a game that is ideal for 10 to 20 people.
- Play it with your class at recess and have your teacher monitor the game, he/she could remove the icebergs and help keep track of who is a baby walrus and who is not.
HOW TO GET STARTED:
- First, you need to find a nice, big open space; somewhere safe, too.
- Then, take the hula hoops and spread them out all over the play area - these are the icebergs!
- When placing the icebergs, be reasonable with the amount of space you have between them.
- Do not put them too close together or too far apart, a distance of about 20 to 50 feet apart is a good range!
- Everyone must agree to the placement of the icebergs.
- Now, pick who is "it," or the HUNGRY WALRUS!
- This can be done by volunteering or picking numbers.
- Whoever is it is the HUNGRY WALRUS and all others are PENGUINS!
THE GAME:
- To start the game, the PENGUINS run around and in between the icebergs.
- They can go in any direction they choose.
- The HUNGRY WALRUS is in the middle with his/her eyes closed.
- Then HUNGRY WALRUS yells, "Here comes the HUNGRY WALRUS," and he/she chases the PENGUINS.
- The PENGUINS then rush to find an iceberg (hula hoop).
- The icebergs are safe from the HUNGRY WALRUS.
- Only one PENGUIN can go on (stand in) each individual iceberg.
- There should only be enough icebergs for all but one penguin.
- THE FIRST PENGUIN INSIDE A HULA HOOP GETS THE ICEBERG!
- Pushing and shoving for the icebergs are not allowed.
- At least one PENGUIN will have to swim away from the HUNGRY WALRUS because of the limited number of icebergs.
- PENGUINS can choose to stay in the water if they dare. They do not have to go on the icebergs.
- If the HUNGRY WALRUS cannot catch a PENGUIN, or wants a rest, he or she yells, "No food here," and covers their eyes and waits to do it all over again.
- If the HUNGRY WALRUS catches a PENGUIN, that PENGUIN becomes a BABY WALRUS.
- The BABY WALRUS helps the HUNGRY WALRUS catch other PENGUINS by freezing them when they tag them.
- Another PENGUIN must tag the FROZEN PENGUIN to unfreeze him or her.
- The BABY WALRUS continues to freeze other PENGUINS, even if the HUNGRY WALRUS is in the middle with his/her eyes covered. Once the HUNGRY WALRUS comes back he or she can tag any PENGUINS that are frozen or swimming (not on an iceberg). Any PENGUIN that is tagged, frozen or unfrozen, becomes a BABY WALRUS.
- Remove one iceberg each time a PENGUIN is tagged.
- This is where a monitor would help. Ask your teacher, parent, or one of your friends to help monitor the game. This will help avoid confusion.
- Play continues until there is only one PENGUIN left.
- That PENGUIN wins the game and is the HUNGRY WALRUS for the next game!
- REMEMBER TO ALWAYS BE A GOOD SPORT. THE ENTIRE POINT OF THIS GAME IS TO HAVE FUN! SO, DON'T TAKE IT TOO SERIOUSLY.
- Always treat each other with respect.
- Always ask an adult's permission before playing outside.
- And always play safe.
