The YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit received a grant to adapt the national YMCA's Y Adventure Guides program for implementation in Detroit. Formerly known as
Indian Guides, Y Adventure Guides is a family program designed for a parent and his or her child age 5-9, in which parents lead and organize activities with YMCA staff support and using program materials developed by the YMCA. Children and adults meet in small groups every month and participate in outdoor "adventures" throughout the year. The YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit will take advantage of the national re-launch of this program by making several changes that will enhance its applicability in an urban setting and increase its appeal to African American families and culturally diverse populations of urban areas. The YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit will also strengthen the program's outdoor focus and add an emphasis on learning and health promoting activities in the outdoors. Project partners include the YMCA Service Learning Academy and Greater Grace Temple.
