Health & Safety Tips - Walking Tips for Winter

  • Dress warmly. Dress in layers.
  • Wear a hat - as much as 35 percent of your body's heat can be lost through the top of your head.
  • A 100 pound person can burn 70 calories walking one mile...that's equal to half a doughnut!
    Speaking of food...It's a good idea to have a light meal before you go for a long walk. You'll need the strength.
  • Drink 8 oz. of water every 15 to 30 minutes while walking.
  • Wear gloves and mittens.
  • If it's really cold outside - try to walk with the wind at your back.
  • If, by chance, you should get warm after walking for a while, be sure to begin to take off some of those layers.
  • Did we mention it's good idea to wear comfortable shoes? Comfortable, Warm shoes.
